Program Overview
The Summer Programs at St. Timothy’s School provide an exciting and stimulating academic program in a fun environment. Students from around the country and around the globe come to our campus to learn, experience new ideas and places, develop strong friendships, and grow as individuals. Our academic programs, committed faculty, campus resources, unique location, and student body combine to create one of the best summer programs available today.
Sessions are open to students entering 8th-12th grades. The average class size ranges from 5-15 with a student-to-teacher ratio of 7 to 1. These small classes offer individual attention and allow us to develop a tight-knit community where each student’s intellectual curiosity is kindled and new ideas are embraced. Students divide their time between classroom instruction and field trips to Washington, DC; Philadelphia; and New York.
Afternoons and weekends are a time for a wide variety of athletic, recreational and cultural activities. Our goal is to offer programs and activities that will enrich every student’s summer experience at St. Timothy’s.
St. Timothy’s is proud of the faculty and staff who work with our students in the summer. They are some of the brightest, most talented, and fun people working in schools today. Our faculty and staff are on duty around the clock to make sure that the summer is both fun and safe.
Program Descriptions
Intensive English Language Program
The Intensive English Language Program is a four-week ESL program stressing the academic skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students will also be involved in an experiential American Culture course. This intensive program will strengthen the students’ practical English skills, help them gain an appreciation of United States history and culture, and prepare them for the TOEFL exam. Students will be placed into three instructional groups based upon the results of a SLEP test and oral interviews upon arrival. The groups consist of basic proficiency (limited exposure to previous English instruction), intermediate proficiency (Good comprehension and grammatical skills) advanced proficiency (a strong capability with the English language requiring polishing in idioms, conversation styles, and formal writing).
Students will spend time in three different instructional classes five mornings a week: Reading, Writing, and Speaking & Listening. Two afternoons a week and all day on Saturday students will spend their time in the American Culture class, which will include field trips to important historical and cultural sites. Three afternoons a week students will be involved in afternoon recreation and athletic programs. Sundays will include time for optional shopping trips, excursions to recreational and amusement sites, and other visits that take advantage of the beautiful Maryland countryside.
