International Baccalaureate Program

St. Timothy’s School is authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), along with nearly 1,600 other schools in 121 countries around the world. We are the only all-girls school in the United States to offer the IB. The IB Curriculum, developed in Geneva, Switzerland almost 40 years ago, prepares students to gain acceptance into prestigious colleges and universities around the world. It allows practice of the cognitive tools needed for success in an increasingly interconnected, global world.

The Diploma Program has become a leading, internationally recognized pre-university qualification. Now it is a symbol of academic excellence worldwide. The student who satisfies its demands demonstrates a strong commitment to learning, both in terms of the mastery of subject content and in the development of wide-ranging skills. Students are also encouraged to appreciate the universal value of human diversity and its legitimate boundaries, while at the same time understanding the common humanity that we all share.

Students learn more than a collection of facts. While each component of the Diploma Program has specific aims and assessment objectives, the distinctive aims of the program as a whole are to: 1) provide an internationally accepted qualification for entry into higher education; 2) promote international understanding; 3) educate the whole person, emphasizing intellectual, personal, emotional, and social growth; 4) develop a broad base of knowledge; 5) learn how to learn; 6) develop a strong sense of their own identity and culture; and 7) develop inquiry and thinking skills, and the capacity to reflect upon and evaluate actions criti¬cally. In addition to the three core requirements—Theory of Knowledge (TOK); Creativity, Action, Service (CAS); and the Extended Essay—the IB includes six groups of scholarly inquiry.
